After the money exploit, Lagos Life reset its economy and added income tax. What that means for your balance and your plans as of this week.
Lagos Life Income Tax and the Economy Right Now
Income tax is in Lagos Life right now, and the game hands you the entire rule inside your own account. As of 6 October 2026 that rule reads: the first ₦1,000,000 you earn from pay in a week is free, then 20%, then 40% above ₦10,000,000, then 45% above ₦50,000,000 - taken automatically, and not applied to betting wins, sales or gifts. The catch is that no official page states any of it. Lagos Life publishes no FAQ, no changelog, no patch notes and no guide page - we checked all of them on 6 October 2026 and every one returns 404. So the official position as of today is still that specific tax rates have not been published, and everything below is what the running game itself shows.
Who reported the tax, and what they actually said
This gets told with one detail too strong most of the time, so here is the exact split.
| Source | Date | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| Technext24 | 5-6 Oct 2026 | "Its in-game economy also had to be reset after hacked accounts produced trillion-naira balances. The team has wiped those balances, restored legitimate money and is adding features such as income tax." |
| Arise News | 5 Oct 2026 | The developer responded by "resetting the exploited funds and restoring legitimate player balances, while promising fixes to prevent the exploit from continuing" |
| @otoide_a, the player who found the balance and bet faults | 5 Oct 2026 | Credits the team with locking money to the server, and then proposes - as his own idea, not as news - making wealth expensive to hold, including a wealth tax |
That is a sequence, not a motive: exploited balances wiped, legitimate balances restored, balances moved server-side, income tax appearing in the same window. No source says the tax was created to repair the economy, and Arise only reports that fixes were promised.
One correction, because it circulates constantly: what shipped is a weekly tax on earnings, not the wealth tax some players were speculating about. Different mechanic, very different effect.
Everything below comes from the build the game served to the browser on 6 October 2026, not from an announcement. The developer can retune any of it next week without publishing anything, because there is no changelog to publish it in. Treat this as a dated snapshot, and trust your own account screen over any guide.
The rule as the game states it
The game ships its own plain-English explanation, in a panel headed with a receipt emoji: the first ₦1,000,000 a week is free, then 20%, 40% above ₦10,000,000, 45% above ₦50,000,000, taken from pay automatically, with bets, sales and gifts not taxed, resetting every Monday.
| Weekly pay earned | Rate on the portion above the previous threshold |
|---|---|
| First ₦1,000,000 | Nothing - tax-free allowance |
| ₦1,000,001 to ₦10,000,000 | 20% |
| ₦10,000,001 to ₦50,000,000 | 40% |
| Above ₦50,000,000 | 45% |
How settlement behaves, as of the same date:
- It is automatic. Tax is deducted as income arrives - nothing to file, nothing to claim back.
- It is charged in steps of ₦50, so the figure on your statement is rounded rather than exact.
- The panel titled "Income tax this week" shows what you earned and what tax you have paid, a badge with the rate you are on at that moment, and how much of your free allowance is left.
- The counter resets every Monday, so the allowance is weekly, not a lifetime one.
- The first time your weekly earnings cross the allowance, a notification tells you tax is now coming off and to look in the Bank.

What gets taxed and what does not
This is the part that actually changes how you play, and it is not the part most guides mention.
| Where the money comes from | Income tax applies |
|---|---|
| Job shifts, paid per shift | Yes |
| One-off earning actions such as freelance gigs and contest prizes | Yes |
| The governor's allowance | Yes |
| Betting wins | No |
| Business and sales income | No |
| Naira another player sends you | No |
Read that as one sentence: the tax sits on labour, not on wealth. A player drawing most of their income from businesses and property pays a much smaller share in income tax than an equally rich player drawing it from shifts.
That splits the income guides in a way they were not written to handle. If most of your weekly income comes from a single job, tax is your main new cost and the arithmetic in every route to making money has to be read net of it. If you run businesses on the side, tax barely touches you and side hustles and business is where your week gets easier. Do not stack a job and a big business and assume both pay the same rate.
Monday is not Saturday
The easiest mistake is assuming every recurring charge lands on the same day. It does not.
| Recurring charge | When it lands |
|---|---|
| Income tax allowance and accumulated tax | Resets Monday, per the game's own wording |
| Rent | Every Saturday - the game's housing screen says so outright |
| Staff wages | Weekly, alongside rent |
| Danfo crew pay | Saturday morning |
| Aircraft hangar, tax and upkeep | Saturday |
Two separate clocks, running a day apart in a seven-day week. If you clear your allowance early one week and land a big shift just before Monday, you pay tax on that shift and then start the new week with the full allowance again - which is how a well-planned week works, if you know it exists.
What this tax does not fix
The balance fault was about the money sitting in your account, not the money coming in each week. Income tax is charged on earnings during a week, and the allowance applies to pay - a large untouched balance is not what this system taxes.
So a rich player can still sit on a large balance. Income tax does not claw that back, and there is no published rule, announcement or appeal path that does. If your own legitimate money looks wrong after the reset, that is a separate question with a separate answer on our money hack and reset page.
The game does carry other drains that are not income tax: a property tax on land, a fee when you sell land, a cut when land is claimed by omo-onile, weekly staff wages, and weekly upkeep on aircraft and danfo fleets, which itemise their own running costs line by line. The expensive-to-hold economy is real; income tax is just the newest layer, and the cheapest to avoid if your income does not come from shifts. The land side is on buying land and property; the bill rent and wages share is on rent every Saturday.
In-game naira has no real-world value and cannot be cashed out, sold or transferred. There is no product that sells you a better tax rate, a tax shield or a "tax reset", and the only real-money transaction in the game is topping up your wallet. Anyone taking payment for one is selling nothing.
So what does your balance mean now?
- The scale moved. Balances before the reset and after it are not the same unit of account.
- Most old screenshots are dead references. The famous wealth images circulating online were captured inside the inflated economy. Quoting them as a target is quoting a currency that no longer exists.
- Rules are the comparable thing. Wage rates, prices and rates stayed legible across the reset; balances did not. Judge progress by what you can buy and what you keep after a week.
- The game is still growing underneath this. The public endpoint at lagoslife.app/api/public-stats reported 53,610 in its online field at 01:40 UTC on 6 October 2026 - an instantaneous reading from one interface, from a counter that has swung by tens of thousands within the same hour. The site's own header counter disagrees with it, and the stats page explains both.
What is still unconfirmed as of 6 October 2026
Stated plainly, because this is where confident-sounding guides go wrong:
- Whether the tax was introduced to repair the economy. Press places it after the reset; no official statement connects the two.
- Whether these rates stay. There is no changelog, so a silent retune would leave no public trace at all.
- Exactly how the game counts "sales" for the untaxed list - the wording is the game's, and we have not seen the boundary tested.
- Whether any compensation or clawback system exists for money that was already spent or already handed to another player.
- Any published FAQ, patch note or guide. We checked the obvious routes on 6 October 2026 and all returned 404.
Official source: Lagos Life Terms of Service - the page that does exist, and the only official statement about the game's money. It states that in-game naira has no real-world value and cannot be cashed out, sold or transferred outside the game, and it bars exploiting bugs. Its own footer says it was last updated 1 October 2026.
Re-check this yourself each week
Because there is no changelog, refreshing this page is the whole maintenance job.
| What to check | Where | How often |
|---|---|---|
| The tax rates and the free allowance | Your own weekly statement panel | Weekly |
| Which income sources are being taxed | The same panel's wording | Weekly |
| Whether the weekly policy changed how much you earn | The banner on the game's homepage | Weekly - it rotates |
| Whether the reset stands | Press coverage, since no official page exists | Whenever a big number appears on the timeline |
| Live population | The public stats endpoint | Anytime - it moves constantly |
We keep a separate page for what is on this week, because the weekly banner is the one rotating thing the official site surfaces.
FAQ
Does Lagos Life have income tax right now? Yes. As of 6 October 2026 the live game applies a weekly allowance of ₦1,000,000 on pay, then 20%, 40% above ₦10,000,000 and 45% above ₦50,000,000, deducted automatically.
What is the official tax rate? The developer has not published one on any page. The game itself prints the rule in your own account, which is where the figures above come from, and there is no changelog to confirm them against.
Was income tax added because of the money exploit? Unconfirmed. Technext24 reported the tax arriving in the same window as the reset of exploited balances, and the player who found the faults proposed a wealth tax as the fix. No official statement says either was adopted to repair the economy.
Do betting wins and business income get taxed? Not according to the game's own wording: bets, sales and gifts are listed as untaxed, while pay, one-off earning actions and the governor's allowance are taxed.
Does income tax reduce my existing balance? No. It is charged on earnings within a week. A large stored balance is not touched by it.
When does the tax week reset? Every Monday, per the game's own wording - which is not the same day as Saturday rent, wages and crew pay.
Is Lagos Life official? No. We are an independent player guide with no connection to the developer. The official site is lagoslife.app, mirrored at lagoslife.eliysites.com; our own domain has an extra letter in it. Parked domains such as lagoslife.com and lagos.life are for sale and have nothing to do with the game - see where to play safely.
